3 Essential Commands

Sit:
  1. Hold a single treat in your hand to captivate the attention of your dog.
  2. Move your hand with the treat a little past your dog’s head, which will allow it to follow through with the sitting motion
  3. Say the word “sit” after the bottom has reached the floor.
  4. Repeat the word “sit” each time your dog follows this step and give him a treat.
Stay:

The step after sit is often the command to stay.

  1. Command your dog to sit.
  2. Open your hand the way humans would use to high-five or command a “stop” motion.
  3. Using this “stop” signal while holding a treat in the other hand, command your dog to stay.
  • At this time, your dog will want to come after the treat.
  • Stop him/her, and reward him once he/she listens to your command.
  • Focus on praising and encouraging them while they remain still as opposed to after them lunging for the treat.
  1. Repeat the steps by putting the treat down on the floor this time and command your dog to stay.
  • As your dog improves his/her ability with this trick, inch the treat closer or get creative!

Come:

  1. Put a leash on your dog.
  2. Get close to your dog and say the words “Come” as you tug the leash closer to your body.
  3. Slowly repeat until your dog begins to understand the motion.
  4. Reward with a treat once the command begins to be recognized.
  5. Make sure to start your leash training with a shorter distance.
  6. Lengthen the leash as your pal improves this trick!
  7. Test your dog without your leash and practice the motion

Mastery of this command will make it easier to get your dog into the car when you take it places like the groomers. Mobile Pet Grooming is an option, however, if you have difficulty getting your dog to hop in.
