When deciding to clean your dog’s ears, there are a few crucial facts you must learn. Their ears are highly sensitive and require regular maintenance. Because dogs have very sensitive ears, you must be patient when coming in contact with them. Make sure to be careful with their ear care as they can easily become infected. With the proper ear care, your dog will be able to avoid infections and stay healthy. Learn the proper techniques to achieve the best results.

Prepare Your Dog

For the best ear care, the dog should first be well-groomed. This is so that excess dirt and dead hairs are removed to create a prime condition for ear cleaning. The removal of all the excess will help the ears receive better air flow. More air flow allows the ear to build up less potential for ear wax/debris build-up and infections from being too damp. In short, get your dog in the best condition to get their ears cleaned and avoid infections.

How to Clean Your Dog’s Ears

The key to successful ear cleaning is to start from the outside and working your way in. Be cautious as you work your way in. Once you feel some resistance do not push to go through further, you’ll understand where to stop as you start the process. You will be using separate cotton balls for both the inner and outer ear, so have your tools placed nearby. Using your first cotton ball, do not drench, dab some ear cleaner onto the ball. Proceed to rinse the outer ear and get rid of the debris. Then grab another cotton ball and add some product to cleanse in the inner ear. Once again, DO NOT proceed to rinse past where you feel some resistance. Do a final wipe down with the gauze wrapped over your finger.

** If you choose to use the gauze instead of cotton balls, I recommend that you wrap your entire finger when cleaning. **

Healthy and Clean

Weekly ear cleaning should help your dog keep his ear health on track. Before and after your dog’s ear care, make sure to give your dog a lot of affection. Never forget how important your dog’s well being is. Take good care so they are less susceptible to infections and stay clean. Keep your dog’s ears well ventilated and clean. This will help prevent more trips to the vet and keep your dog happy.
